SEBASTIANS DIARY

Welcome to my diary & thank you for visiting! ^.^
I have a lot of plans for this website, but for now this should just act a blog / diary where I write down some thoughts that would usually just be in my notes app. As time goes on I also wanna write movie / anime / show / game reviews and interpretations, share art, share cool stuff I've researched. But for now I wanna keep it simple. enjoy!!

what i've learned on how to study effectively

"what if i were not to die, what if life were given back to me, what infinity! i'd lose nothing, i'd reckon up every minute separately, I'd let nothing be wasted! he said that in the end, this thought turned into such anger in him that he wished they would hurry up and shoot him." (from the idiot, dostojevski)

maybe it's a bit of a stretch to use this quote to describe the feeling before an exam, but it's true that time seems especially valuable when you have almost none of it left, so i want to write down my thoughts on effective studying. i don't want to waste my time writing this and i don't want to waste any reader's time, so... there is no silver bullet a few days before the exam. i don't think it is possible to absorb that much information effectively in such a short amount of time (i'm ignoring the easy peasy exams here).

so now that that's out of the way... it's easiest to study something if you're interested in it, and it's easy to become interested in something if you have enough time. you *need* enough time because interest is not something you can build overnight. so my advice is to brute force that part of your brain that causes interest.
one way to do this is to become interested in the people behind what you're studying. just take 15 minutes out of your study session to research the person that came up with the algorithm you're studying, for example, this can be george dantzig if you're studying operations research.
another way is to try to understand why this is something that someone came up with. for example, why do we use the concept of the marginal product in economics so much? well, that's a relatively new thing, and it wasn't really the case like 200 years ago. so why this method and not another?
it's important to do what you feel like doing. sometimes there's days where i just feel like reading, so i read the slides and try to understand them and i don't do anything 'myself', so to speak. you'll retain information a lot better if you actually want to do what you're doing, and you don't just want to get it over with.
don't let your pen slow you down. this is a bit controversial but i think trying to match the speed of your notes with the speed of your brain is really important. i think spending many minutes decorating your notes or writing neatly is counterproductive. imo it only makes sense to do that when your brain power matches your writing speed, as i said, so when you're really tired, but at that point i'd rather just go to sleep.

so yeah that's all for now

this is all very subjective

A short review of the anime Frieren: To Journey's end

This is one of the best animes I have watched until now, I think especially because I can really identify with it. It's almost impossible to spoil this show (as of now), because nothing really happens: you just accompany a trio on their journey somewhere. The show starts with the end of the journey of frieren and her friends. Frieren is an elf that can live thousans of years, but her friends consist mostly of humans, so a few years after the journey ends, most of them are already dead. That's when Frieren realizes that she never really made an effort to get to know her friends, she walked through her adventures mostly with apathy. Over the course of the show, she retraces her past adventures and tries to cherish the time she has with her friends, knowing that they will soon be dead. Sometimes all they do is clean up statues or bathe, and what this anime shows is that that's what life is all about, that the journey can end up being far more meaningful than the end. Cherish the time with the people around you while they are still here.
